from the San Francisco Chronicle

San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty, whose district includes the Castro, said the No on 8 campaign was not "culturally competent." Dufty said the campaign should have gone into "places where it isn't as easy to be gay or queer," like Visitacion Valley and Chinatown.

"I was a foot soldier going where people asked me to go," the supervisor said. "The focus was really misplaced."

It was redundant to campaign against Prop. 8 in the Castro, which overwhelmingly opposed the measure, he said. "It's kind of like if the freedom riders of the '60s never left Harlem."

Yep.

Another reason I like Bevan. He's a politician who keeps exhibiting dangerous common sense.

It's easy for him to say that now. I saw Bevan Dufty with Mayor Newsom campaigning for No on 8 in the Castro. Since the Castro is his district, I don't mind that. At the time they said that getting out the "No" vote here was just as important. I would have liked the supervisors of those other districts get involved. I have emailed some of them about it since the election.

The good thing about the detailed map provided afterward is that it shows the areas where outreach is needed. I've asked Steve to go on a handholding trek with me through Chinatown. Not that big of an impact, but I don't have time to undertake Chinese at the moment.

Anything worth visiting in Visitacion Valley? I haven't spent any time there.
